Notes to editors
At 90 years young, Hertz is the only truly global car rental company, operating from 8,100 locations in 147 countries. It all started with the pioneer of car renting, Walter L Jacobs, who, at the age of 22, opened a car rental operation in Chicago, USA in September 1918 with a dozen Model-T Fords.
Five years later John Hertz joined forces with Walter L Jacobs. By this time the business had 565 cars on the road and was generating annual revenues of $1 million -- meaning the car rental sector was well and truly born.
Over the years, Hertz created many industry firsts. Hertz opened the first airport rent-a-car location in Chicago in 1932, creating the concept of 'fly-drive'. It also became the first vehicle rental company, 75 years ago, to enable customers to collect a vehicle at one location and drop it off at another -- a service which is now common place throughout the rental industry.
The car rental industry's first frequent travellers club was also launched by Hertz with its Hertz #1 Club in 1972. The company launched the industry's first express service with its Gold program in 1980. In 1984, Hertz pioneered the first computerised driving directions.
More recently, Hertz has continued to lead the market with innovative car collections and the launch of the industry's first Worldwide Online Check-in service.
Hertz is the world's largest general use car rental company, operating from over 8,100 corporate locations in 147 countries. In 2008 Hertz celebrates its 90th year of delivering quality car rental solutions to leisure and corporate customers.
Product and service innovations such as Hertz #1 Club Gold, specially designed NeverLost satellite navigation systems, Hertz in-car DVD Entertainment and unique cars offered through the company's Prestige, Fun and Green Collections, set Hertz apart from the competition.
